Lisbon Waste Management Regulation
Beverages given in plastic containers by restaurants and bars posed a huge waste issue in the Portuguese capital with an overall waste generation increase of 10% from 2015 to 2018.
In order to tackle this 31 December, 2019 Lisbon released a new regulation, the Waste Management, Urban Hygiene and Cleanliness Strategy. Article 73 (6) states that “It is forbidden to serve, outside the establishment, products from its sale and consumption in single-use or disposable plastic, namely cups.” This ban tackles all single-use plastic in tableware (cutlery, straws, cups) in establishments, bars and all non-sedentary activities of the catering sector and drinking sector as well as in retail.
Officially coming into force in on 1 January 2020, the ban gave establishments until March 2020 to adapt to the new regulations. Any establishment that is seen to be in non-compliance with the new measures will be fined by the competent Municipality.
